After college, Stover was signed by the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 1990. He was waived before the regular season started, but he quickly signed with the Cleveland Browns, where he played for 12 seasons. Stover earned a reputation as one of the most reliable kickers in the league, and he became the first player in NFL history to kick 100 or more field goals for two different teams when he reached the milestone with the Baltimore Ravens in 2004. He won Super Bowl XXXV with the Ravens and was named to the Pro Bowl in 2000.

Stover retired after the 2010 season, finishing his career with 2,004 points scored, making him the fourth-highest scorer in NFL history at that time. He spent most of his career with the Browns and Ravens, but he also had short stints with the Indianapolis Colts and the New York Jets. Stover is widely regarded as one of the best kickers in NFL history, and his longevity and consistency helped him establish a lasting legacy in the league.
