He was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up in a poor and unstable household. Oher attended Briarcrest Christian School, where he played high school football and gained recognition for his talents on the field. He was heavily recruited by several colleges and ultimately attended the University of Mississippi, where he continued to shine as a football player. Oher was selected by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft and played with the team for five seasons, earning recognition as a solid offensive lineman.

In 2014, Oher signed with the Tennessee Titans for one season before being released due to injury concerns. He then signed with the Carolina Panthers, where he played for three seasons before being released in 2017. Throughout his NFL career, Oher experienced several injuries and setbacks that led to his retirement from football in 2018. Despite his challenges, Oher's story of overcoming adversity both on and off the field has inspired many and brought attention to the power of football in changing lives.
