Woody Hayes Autographs
Woody Hayes was an American football coach who was widely regarded as one of the greatest college football coaches of all time. He was born on February 14, 1913, in Clifton, Ohio, and was raised in Newcomerstown, Ohio. Hayes played football at Denison University and graduated in 1935. He coached high school football in Ohio for several years before getting his first college coaching job at Miami University in Ohio in 1949.
Hayes became head coach at Ohio State University in 1951 and remained in that position for the next 28 seasons. During that time, he led the Buckeyes to five national championships, 13 Big Ten championships, and 205 wins. Hayes was known for his intense and disciplined coaching style, as well as his strong sense of loyalty to his players, his alma mater, and the state of Ohio. He also had a reputation for being somewhat temperamental, and he was famously involved in an incident in 1978 where he punched a Clemson player during the Gator Bowl.
Despite his sometimes controversial behavior, Hayes is widely remembered for his contributions to the game of football and to the Ohio State community. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983, and his legacy continues to be celebrated by Ohio State fans and players to this day. Hayes passed away on March 12, 1987, at the age of 74.
