Tom Watson is an American professional golfer born on September 4, 1949, in Kansas City, Missouri. He began his professional golf career in 1971 and went on to become one of the most accomplished golfers in history. He has won 39 PGA Tour events and 14 European Tour titles, including eight major championships.
Watson's golf career began in the late 1960s when he played college golf at Stanford University. He won the Western Junior Championship in 1967 and the US Junior Amateur in 1970. He turned professional in 1971 and won his first PGA Tour event in 1974 at the Western Open. He won five British Open titles between 1975 and 1983, which were viewed as perhaps the most significant wins in his career. Watson is known for his short game, with many experts describing him as one of the best putters of all time.
Watson played in the Ryder Cup eight times and captained the US team on three occasions. In June 2009, at the age of 59, he became the oldest player to lead after thirty-six holes of a US Open. Watson has been awarded the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the game of golf. He is one of the most revered golfers of all time, and his legacy in the sport will always be remembered.
