Arbour's coaching career began in the NHL with the St. Louis Blues in 1970. He then moved on to coach the New York Islanders from 1973 to 1986 and again from 1988 to 1994. During his time with the Islanders, Arbour led his team to win four consecutive Stanley Cup championships (1980-1983) and helped them set a record for the longest undefeated streak in North American professional sports at 15 games. He became known for his defensive strategy and the "trap" defense, which saw him implement his team's game plan centered around his players' defensive responsibilities.

Arbour was one of the most respected individuals in the NHL and had a reputation for being a strict disciplinarian who put a lot of emphasis on playing the game the right way. In 1996, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution to the sport he loved. He passed away on August 28, 2015, at the age of 82, but his legacy in the world of ice hockey remains strong. Arbour's accomplishments as a coach and his dedication to the game of hockey have left an indelible mark on the sport, and he will forever be remembered as one of the greatest coaches in NHL history.
