Sutter started playing hockey at a young age and by the time he was 16, he was playing for the Red Deer Rebels in the Western Hockey League. In 2007, he was selected 11th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in the NHL Entry Draft. He made his NHL debut in October of that year and went on to play for the Hurricanes for six seasons. During that time, he was known for his solid two-way play, as well as his speed and skill on the ice.

In 2015, Sutter was traded to the Vancouver Canucks where he has continued to play to this day. He has been an important player for the Canucks, contributing both offensively and defensively. Throughout his career, Sutter has been recognized for his leadership and work ethic, making him a valuable asset to any team he plays for.
