Born on May 28, 1988, in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Perron began playing hockey at a young age in his hometown. He spent three seasons playing for the Lewiston Maineiacs in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League before he was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the first round (26th overall) of the NHL Entry Draft in 2007.
