Laperriere played for teams such as the New York Rangers, the Los Angeles Kings, and the Philadelphia Flyers, where he wore the "A" as an alternate captain during his final seasons. He was widely regarded as a fierce and dedicated player who played with both skill and heart. Laperriere was also known for his toughness on the ice and was even named the winner of the NHL's Masterton Trophy in 2010, an award given to the player who best exemplifies perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication.

In addition to his impressive NHL career, Laperriere also represented Canada in international play, winning a gold medal at the 1993 World Junior Championships. After retiring from professional hockey in 2010, Laperriere went on to become a coach, serving as an assistant coach for the Philadelphia Flyers and eventually being named head coach of their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
