He started his hockey career playing for the Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he was drafted by Vancouver Canucks in the sixth round of the 1984 NHL Entry Draft. McLean’s skills as a goaltender quickly caught the attention of the Canucks, and he made his NHL debut in 1987. He played for the Canucks for 11 seasons and became a fan-favorite due to his impressive goal-keeping skills. During his time with the Canucks, McLean was a two-time All-Star and a finalist for the Vezina Trophy in 1992. His most notable performance with the team was during the 1994 Stanley Cup playoffs, when he led the Canucks to the finals, only to lose to the New York Rangers in game seven.

After playing for the Canucks, McLean played for the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, and the New York Rangers before retiring in 2002. Throughout his career, he played in 612 NHL games, with 245 wins, 263 losses, and 57 ties or no-decisions. McLean’s contribution to the Canucks was significant, and in 1998, he was inducted into the team’s Ring of Honour.
