Mark Messier is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in NHL history. He was born on January 18, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, and began his hockey career there as a teenager. Messier played for the Edmonton Oilers for the first 12 seasons of his NHL career, from 1979 to 1991. While with the Oilers, he won five Stanley Cup championships and played on one of the most dominant teams in NHL history, alongside other legendary players such as Wayne Gretzky.
