Michael Leighton is a former professional ice hockey goaltender widely known for his exceptional netminding skills. Born on May 19, 1981 in Petrolia, Ontario, Canada, Leighton fell in love with hockey at a young age and decided to pursue a career in the sport. He started playing in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) where he was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the sixth round of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft.
Leighton made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks in 2003 and went on to play for several other teams including the Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Rockford IceHogs. However, he is best known for his time with the Flyers where he played a pivotal role in the team's run to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2010. During the playoffs that year, he made history by becoming the first goaltender in NHL history to record three series-clinching shutouts in one postseason.
Throughout his career, Leighton won several accolades including the 2008-09 Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Award and the 2010 Pelle Lindbergh Memorial Trophy. He retired from professional hockey in 2020 after playing for over two decades. Despite facing injuries and setbacks throughout his career, Leighton is remembered as a talented and resilient goaltender who left a significant impact on the history of the NHL.
