In 2001, at the age of 18, Koivu was drafted sixth overall by the Minnesota Wild. He made his NHL debut in the 2005-06 season, scoring his first NHL goal in the second game. He quickly established himself as an integral part of the team, becoming the Wild's permanent captain in 2009.
