Leino made his North American debut during the 2008-09 season, signing with the Detroit Red Wings. While he struggled to find a place in the lineup during his rookie season, he showed flashes of promise, scoring his first NHL goal on February 24, 2009. The following season, he became a regular in the Red Wings lineup, playing in 42 games and contributing 15 points. He was part of Detroit's run to the Western Conference Final, but the team was ultimately eliminated by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Leino's breakout season came in 2009-10, when he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. He made an immediate impact, scoring 21 points in just 19 regular season games, then adding 21 more in 19 playoff games as the Flyers made an improbable run to the Stanley Cup Final. Though they ultimately fell to the Blackhawks, Leino's performance established him as a top-tier offensive player in the league. He played for four more seasons before announcing his retirement in 2015. Throughout his career, he amassed 40 goals and 70 assists for a total of 110 points in 286 NHL games.
