Gingrich attended college at Emory University in Georgia, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in history. Gingrich’s political career started when he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 1978, representing Georgia’s 6th congressional district. He served in the House for ten terms and became known for his leadership roles in the Republican Party. He was ultimately elected Speaker of the House in 1995, becoming the first Republican to hold that position in 40 years.
