He was part of a distinguished family of racing drivers as his brothers, Bobby and Jerry, also had successful careers. Al's racing career spanned many years, and he competed in various motorsports disciplines, including dirt track, stock car, and sports car racing. However, he is best known for his accomplishments in IndyCar racing, a sport where he achieved legendary status. In 1965, Al won his first IndyCar race at Pikes Peak International Raceway. He went on to win his first Indianapolis 500 in 1970, driving the Johnny Lightning Special. He repeated his victory at the race in 1971 and 1978, making him one of just three drivers to win the event four times in their career.

Throughout his illustrious career, Al Unser won numerous races, including Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, the International Race of Champions, and the Daytona 24 Hours. In addition to his four Indy 500 victories, he won two national championships in the CART series, and his records in the sport still stand to this day. Despite retiring from racing almost three decades ago, Al is still much revered among racing fans, particularly for his exploits in the IndyCar scene.
