Marlin recorded his first NASCAR Cup Series win in 1994 at the Daytona 500, which he would subsequently win again in 1995. He went on to climb the ranks and win a total of 10 races in his career and earned 216 top-ten finishes. One of his biggest achievements in NASCAR came in 2001 when he won three consecutive races at the start of the season, leading to him being crowned as the points leader for the first time in his career.

Marlin is renowned for his endurance and tenacity, and his perseverance earned him the nickname "Silver Bullet." He was the first driver in NASCAR history to win the Daytona 500 back-to-back since Richard Petty had last done it in 1973. In 2003, Marlin was injured in a crash and announced his retirement from full-time racing soon after. Although he is no longer competing, Sterling Marlin's legacy remains in NASCAR history as an accomplished driver, and his contributions to the sport are widely recognized.
