Gene Cernan Autographs
Gene Cernan was an American astronaut and naval aviator who had a thriving career in space. Born on March 14, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois, Cernan attended Purdue University and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering. He served as a Navy fighter pilot during the Vietnam War and was awarded several commendations for his service. In 1963, Cernan became a member of the NASA astronaut corps and quickly made a name for himself in the aerospace industry.
Cernan was part of NASA's Gemini and Apollo missions during the 1960s and 1970s. He made his first trip to space as a pilot on the Gemini 9A mission in 1966, where he conducted key spacewalk experiments. His most significant space achievement came in 1972 when he became the last human to walk on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission. Cernan spent 73 hours on the moon, conducting geological experiments and collecting samples. His space career spanned over two decades, and he retired from NASA and the Navy in 1976.
After his retirement, Cernan became a successful businessman and public speaker, promoting the value of space exploration and advocating for the future of human spaceflight. He also authored a book, "The Last Man on the Moon," which detailed his experiences on the Apollo 17 mission. Cernan passed away on January 16, 2017, at the age of 82. He was a true pioneer in space exploration and continues to inspire future generations of astronauts and engineers.
