Michael Collins Autograph

Michael Collins, born on October 31, 1930, was an American astronaut, military pilot, and engineer. He was selected by NASA for the Gemini 10 mission, in which he made a space walk and performed a rendezvous with another spacecraft. He then went on to pilot the Apollo 11 mission in which Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the moon. Although Collins did not get to walk on the moon himself, his contributions to that historic mission were critical. He piloted the Command Module, which orbited the moon while Armstrong and Aldrin explored its surface, and he took some of the most iconic photographs of the mission. More about Michael Collins

Collins pursued a career in the Air Force before joining NASA's astronaut program in 1963. He first orbited the earth in July 1966, alongside fellow astronaut John Young, during the Gemini 10 mission. During this mission, Collins performed two spacewalks to retrieve experiments and attach a tether between the Gemini and Agena spacecrafts. This mission helped to further the US space program's goal of putting a man on the moon before the end of the decade.

Collins was chosen to be the Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, which was the first manned moon landing in human history. He played a critical role while Armstrong and Aldrin descended and returned from the moon's surface. Collins had to maneuver the Command Module around the moon and maintain contact with NASA's mission control in Houston. His ability to execute the mission successfully and safely earned him high respect and recognition in the scientific community. Collins retired from NASA in 1970 and continued to serve the country in a variety of other roles, including as a consultant for the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum.
