He first gained recognition with his one-man performance in the Broadway production “No Time for Sergeants” in 1955, which led to his role in the film adaptation of the play. Griffith’s most famous television role was the titular character in “The Andy Griffith Show,” which aired from 1960 to 1968. The show was set in Mayberry, a fictional small town in North Carolina, and centered around Griffith’s character, Sheriff Andy Taylor, and his family and friends. The show was a massive hit and remains one of the most popular television sitcoms of all time. In addition to starring in the show, Griffith also wrote several episodes and directed a few as well.

After “The Andy Griffith Show” ended, Griffith continued to work in television, appearing in numerous other shows throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He also starred in the legal drama “Matlock” from 1986 to 1995, in which he played the titular character, a criminal defense lawyer. Griffith won two Primetime Emmy Awards for “The Andy Griffith Show” and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1992.
