In 2006, Jeff was selected by the Cubs in the fifth round of the Major League Baseball draft. He spent five seasons in the minor leagues, honing his skills and adapting to the grueling demands of professional baseball. In September 2008, Jeff made his major league debut, pitching in relief against the Cincinnati Reds. He proved to be a reliable reliever, earning his first win in July 2009 against the Philadelphia Phillies. In 2011, Jeff transitioned into a starting pitcher and recorded 8 victories in 31 starts, showcasing his versatility and adaptability.

From 2012 to 2019, Jeff played for a variety of teams, including the Oakland Athletics, the Chicago White Sox, the San Francisco Giants, and the Toronto Blue Jays. He amassed a record of 84-101, striking out 1,558 batters in 1,707 innings pitched. Jeff's best season came in 2014 when he posted a 2.99 ERA, a 1.07 WHIP, and 202 strikeouts, earning him an All-Star nod and a fifth-place finish in the National League Cy Young Award voting.
