Scott's basketball career started at Arizona State University, where he earned the nickname "Ice" for his composure on the court. He was drafted by the San Diego Clippers as the fourth overall pick in the 1983 NBA draft, and his rookie year was impressive, earning him a spot on the NBA All-Rookie First Team. In 1987, he was traded to the Lakers and became an integral part of the team, as they went on to win back-to-back championships in 1987 and 1988. He later won his third championship with the Lakers in 2001, this time as the head coach of the team.

After his playing days, Scott moved into coaching, winning the NBA Coach of the Year Award in 2008 while coaching the New Orleans Hornets. He also coached the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Lakers, but he is mostly remembered for his playing days. He was inducted into the Arizona State Hall of Fame in 1989, and in 2021 Scott was inducted into the Southern California Sports Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His contributions to the game of basketball, both as a player and coach, have cemented his place as one of the legendary figures in the history of the sport.
