Bud Grant, born Harry Peter Grant, was a former American Football player and coach who is widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. He was born on May 20, 1927, in Superior, Wisconsin, and grew up playing various sports including basketball, baseball, and football. In 1950, Bud Grant was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the NFL draft. He played for the Eagles for two seasons before being traded to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League in 1953. He played for the Blue Bombers for 10 seasons and was a five-time CFL All-Star. He also led the team to four Grey Cup championships. After his playing career ended, he went on to become the head coach of the Blue Bombers from 1957 to 1966, where he won six Western Conference championships and four Grey Cup championships.

In 1967, Bud Grant was hired as the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL. He led the Vikings for 18 seasons, winning 11 division championships, four conference championships, and two NFL championships. He was known for his stoic demeanor on the sidelines and for his innovative coaching strategies, including his use of advanced scouting techniques and the famous “Purple People Eaters” defense. He retired from coaching in 1985 with a career record of 168–108–5, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1994.
