LeBeau is best known for his work as a defensive coordinator for multiple teams in the National Football League (NFL). LeBeau played college football at Ohio State University, where he played both as a cornerback and halfback. He was selected in the fifth round of the 1959 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. He played for the Browns from 1959-1960, before being traded to the Detroit Lions. LeBeau played for the Lions from 1960-1972 and was selected to three Pro Bowls during his career.

After retiring as a player, LeBeau began his coaching career as an assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1973. He then went on to coach for the Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Tennessee Titans. As a defensive coordinator, LeBeau's teams were known for their dominant defenses and aggressive play styles. He helped the Steelers win two Super Bowl championships and coached numerous players to Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.
