Mike Shanahan is a retired American football coach who was born on August 24, 1952, in Oak Park, Illinois. He played football for his high school, later graduating from Eastern Illinois University. Shanahan began his coaching career in the late 1970s as an assistant coach for a number of college teams, including the University of Oklahoma and the University of Minnesota. In 1984, he was hired as the head coach of the Los Angeles Raiders but was fired after the team's first season. More about Mike Shanahan

Shanahan then became the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos and was promoted to head coach in 1995. During his 14 seasons with the Broncos, Shanahan led the team to two Super Bowl wins, first in 1998 and again in 1999. He also helped develop superstar quarterback John Elway and running back Terrell Davis. Shanahan's team had a reputation for having an explosive offense, and his system of running and passing plays became known as the "Zone Block" scheme.

After leaving the Broncos, Shanahan was hired as head coach of the Washington Redskins, where he spent four seasons before being fired in 2013. Throughout his career, Shanahan was lauded for his offensive expertise and his ability to develop and motivate players. In 2016, he was inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in recognition of his enormous contribution to the team.
