Roy Helu Jr. was born on December 7, 1988, in Danville, California. His parents, Samoan immigrants, encouraged Helu to play football from a young age, and he quickly proved to be a talented running back. Helu attended San Ramon Valley High School in Danville, where he excelled on the football field, rushing for nearly 4,000 yards in his four-year career. At Nebraska, Helu became one of the top running backs in the Big 12 Conference. In his freshman season, he rushed for 803 yards and seven touchdowns, earning All-Big 12 Freshman honors. He improved on those numbers in his sophomore and junior seasons, rushing for over 1,100 yards each year and earning All-Big 12 honors both times. In his senior season, Helu rushed for 1,245 yards and 11 touchdowns, leading Nebraska to the 2010 Big 12 Championship Game. He finished his college career with 3,404 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns.

After his standout college career, Helu was selected by the Washington Redskins in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He played four seasons in Washington, serving as a key backup to starting running back Alfred Morris. In 2011, Helu had a breakout game against the Seattle Seahawks, rushing for 108 yards and a touchdown. He continued to be a valuable member of the Redskins' backfield, both as a runner and a receiver, until injuries derailed his career.
