Don Cherry was born on February 5, 1934, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. From an early age, he was passionate about hockey and began playing in various leagues. He played for a number of junior teams before signing with the American Hockey League in 1955. In his first season, he played for the Rochester Americans and was named Rookie of the Year. Cherry had a successful career in hockey and played in both the NHL and the AHL for numerous teams. He played for the Boston Bruins for five seasons and won the Stanley Cup in 1972. He retired as a player in 1972 and started working as a coach. He became known for his tough coaching style and led the Bruins to two Stanley Cup appearances.

Cherry is best known for his role as a commentator on Hockey Night in Canada. He began working as a commentator in 1981 and became known for his “Coach’s Corner” segment. He is known for his controversial opinions and his colorful suits. His contributions to hockey have been recognized through various awards, including being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010.
