Hextall made his NHL debut in 1986 with the Philadelphia Flyers, and quickly made an impact with his aggressive style of play. He was known for venturing out of his crease to play the puck, an unusual tactic at the time that eventually became a trademark of his game. In his rookie year, Hextall led the Flyers to the Stanley Cup Finals, and his outstanding play earned him the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP, becoming the first player to win the award from the losing team.

Over the course of his NHL career, Hextall played for several teams, including the Flyers, Quebec Nordiques, New York Islanders, and the Los Angeles Kings. He made two more trips to the Stanley Cup Finals, with the Flyers in 1997 and the Kings in 1993, but was unable to capture another championship. Hextall was a three-time NHL All-Star, and won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender in 1987, becoming the first rookie to do so since 1961. After retiring from playing in 1999, Hextall went on to work in various roles with several NHL teams, including the Flyers, where he served as the team's general manager from 2014 to 2018.
