As President, Carter faced numerous challenges both domestically and internationally. He enacted several controversial policies, including the deregulation of energy and transportation industries and the creation of the Department of Education. Carter's most notable foreign policy achievement was the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978, which led to a peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. However, his presidency was also marked by struggles with the Iranian Hostage Crisis and the Soviet Union's invasion of Afghanistan, which ultimately contributed to his loss in the 1980 presidential election.

Following his presidency, Carter has remained active in public service and humanitarian efforts. He established the Carter Center in 1982, an organization dedicated to advancing democracy, promoting human rights, and preventing disease. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in conflict resolution and human rights advocacy. As one of the longest-lived presidents in history, Carter continues to be a prominent public figure, and his legacy as a political leader and humanitarian is widely recognized.
