He began playing baseball at an early age, and by the age of 15, he was already a member of the Cuban national youth team. Chapman continued to hone his skills and by 21, he joined Holguin Sabuesos, a Cuban National Series team. His exceptional talent on the mound got him scouted by various Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, and in 2009, he defected from Cuba to pursue a career in the United States.
