Dave Winfield is an American former professional baseball player who played in the MLB for 22 years. He was born on October 3, 1951 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Winfield grew up playing multiple sports but decided to focus on baseball during his college years at the University of Minnesota. He was drafted in 1973 by the San Diego Padres as the fourth overall pick in the draft.
Winfield played for several teams during his career including the San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Minnesota Twins, and the Cleveland Indians. He was known for his strong arm and great fielding skills. He also had a powerful swing and was a consistent hitter throughout his career. Winfield was selected to the All-Star team 12 times and won seven Gold Glove awards for his fielding abilities.
One of Winfield's most memorable moments came during his time with the Yankees. In Game 6 of the 1981 World Series, he hit a double in the 12th inning that ultimately led to the Yankees winning the game and the series. After retiring from baseball in 1995, Winfield remained involved in the sport as a coach and executive. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001, recognizing his outstanding career and contributions to the sport.
