Benoit began his baseball career in 1996 when he signed with the Texas Rangers as an amateur free agent. He made his debut in the Major Leagues in 2001, and he played with several teams throughout his 15-year career, including the Detroit Tigers, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners. Benoit was primarily a relief pitcher and had a successful career, earning a reputation as a reliable reliever. He had a career record of 58-49 with 51 saves, a 3.83 earned run average (ERA), and 789 strikeouts. Benoit was known for his versatility on the mound, as he could pitch in various situations, including closing games, setting up for the closer, or pitching in middle relief. His best season was in 2010 when he pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays, earning a 1.34 ERA and 25 holds, and finishing seventh in the Cy Young Award voting.

Benoit retired from baseball in 2018, after spending his last season with the Washington Nationals. Over the course of his career, he played in the postseason five times and was part of the Detroit Tigers team that reached the World Series in 2013.
