He was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2006 MLB draft, and he quickly made a name for himself with his solid hitting, exceptional defensive skills, and his ability to play multiple positions. Jon Jay made his MLB debut in April 2010 with the Cardinals. He quickly established himself as a reliable outfielder with his ability to make clutch hits and plays in the field. Jon played with the Cardinals through the 2015 season, during which he won a World Series championship in 2011. In the 2016 season, Jon Jay played for the San Diego Padres, followed by the Chicago Cubs in 2017, where he played a key role in their team's World Series win that same season.

In January 2018, Jay signed a one-year contract with the Kansas City Royals, followed by a one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox in 2019. Throughout his career, Jon Jay has been a consistent presence in Major League Baseball with his reliable bat and glove. He has maintained a career batting average of .285, with over 5,000 at-bats in the MLB.
