Raines quickly became one of the most important players on the Montreal Expos team. He was known for his speed and base running, as well as being an excellent hitter. In 1981, he won the National League's batting title, with a batting average of .343. He also led the league in stolen bases for four consecutive seasons. Over a 23-year career, he played for six different teams and was a seven-time All-Star. He was awarded the National League's Silver Slugger award three times and was named the Most Valuable Player for the 1987 All-Star game.

In addition to his career as a player, Raines has also served as a coach for several teams. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2017, after years of being passed over due to controversy surrounding his history of drug use.
