Orakpo was drafted by the Washington Redskins in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played for the Redskins for six seasons and was one of the team's most dominant players, earning four Pro Bowl selections and was also named the team's MVP twice. In 2015, Orakpo signed with the Tennessee Titans, where he continued his successful career in the NFL. He led the Titans in sacks in each of his first three seasons, and in 2019, he was named to his fifth Pro Bowl. In May 2020, Orakpo announced his retirement from football after playing for the Titans for four years.

Off the field, Orakpo established the Brian Orakpo Foundation, which aims to encourage children from disadvantaged backgrounds to participate in extracurricular activities. The foundation also provides financial assistance to families who cannot afford to pay for the equipment or uniforms needed to participate in sports. Orakpo's contributions to the NFL have earned him a place in the hearts of fans, and his charitable work has solidified his place as a role model off the field as well.
