Harper began his professional career with the New Orleans Saints, who drafted him in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. He became an integral part of the team's defense and helped them win Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. He was also named to two Pro Bowls during his time with the Saints.

In 2014, Harper signed with the Carolina Panthers, where he played for two seasons before returning to the Saints for his final NFL season in 2016. Throughout his career, Harper proved to be a strong and consistent player, earning a reputation as a hard hitter and an excellent defender.
