Antti Niemi Autographs
Antti Niemi is a former Finnish professional ice hockey goaltender who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for a decade. Born on August 29th, 1983, in Vantaa, Finland, Niemi started his hockey career in the junior leagues in his homeland. Niemi was undrafted into the NHL, but that did not stop him from pursuing his passion for hockey. He played his first professional season with the Pelicans Lahti of Finland’s SM-liiga in 2004-05 season where he emerged as one of the talented goalies.
After years of success in the Finnish leagues, Niemi signed with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2008. In his debut season with Chicago, he served as a backup goalie behind Cristobal Huet, but soon got his chance when Huet struggled. Niemi impressed with his skillset, helping the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup in 2010 with his remarkable performance in the playoffs. His outstanding play during the Stanley Cup run earned him the name "Antti Niemi – The Silent Assassin," as he made crucial saves that led the Blackhawks to the championship.
After his time in Chicago, Niemi played for several other NHL teams, including the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, and Montreal Canadiens. Despite spending a considerable portion of his career as a backup goalie, Niemi was well-respected in the NHL for his work ethic and professionalism. After playing his last game with the Canadiens in 2019, Niemi announced his retirement from professional hockey, ending his career with a 245-141-53 record, 2.48 goals-against average (GAA), and .912 save percentage in the NHL.
