Conklin's professional career began in 2001 when he signed as an undrafted free agent with the Edmonton Oilers. He played for various teams during his NHL career, including the Columbus Blue Jackets, Buffalo Sabres, and the Detroit Red Wings. Conklin is probably best known for his final season in the NHL, where he played as a backup for the Detroit Red Wings during the 2008-2009 season. He earned a nomination for the coveted Bill Masterton Trophy for his dedication and perseverance to reach the NHL after years of being an AHL backup goaltender.

During his time in the NHL, Conklin played 215 games, accumulating a win-loss record of 95-67-21, with a goals-against average of 2.69 and a save percentage of .906. Conklin also played in the AHL for various teams, including the Hamilton Bulldogs and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Following his retirement from the NHL in 2013, Conklin has transitioned to a management and coaching role within the sport, working with the AHL Chicago Wolves for three seasons before joining the NHL's St. Louis Blues in 2019.
