Ruben Amaro Jr. is a former Major League Baseball player and coach, as well as a former general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. Amaro was born on February 12, 1965, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is the son of former Major League Baseball player Ruben Amaro Sr. He played baseball at Stanford University, where he was an All-American shortstop, and was later drafted by the California Angels in the 1987 amateur draft. Amaro played for eight different Major League Baseball teams during his playing career, including the California Angels, Philadelphia Phillies, and Boston Red Sox. He was primarily a utility player, playing multiple positions throughout his career, including second base, third base, and outfield. Amaro was known for his defensive skills and was often used as a late-inning defensive replacement. In total, he played in 485 games and had a career batting average of .235.

After his playing career, Amaro transitioned to coaching and front-office positions. He served as the first base coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1999 to 2003, and in 2008, he became the team's assistant general manager. In 2009, he was promoted to general manager, a position he held until 2015. During his tenure as general manager, the Phillies won the National League East division five times and advanced to the World Series twice, winning it all in 2008. Amaro was also known for making bold trades and signings, including acquiring Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, and Roy Oswalt, among others.
