After college, Francona was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1980 MLB draft. He played for several teams during his major league career, including the Expos, Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Milwaukee Brewers, and Oakland Athletics. He was a versatile player, primarily playing outfield and first base. Francona retired from playing in 1990, and went on to become a coach and then a manager.

Francona's most notable successes came in his role as a manager. He began managing in 1997 as the skipper for the Philadelphia Phillies. After several years with the Phillies, Francona took over as manager of the Boston Red Sox in 2004. Under his leadership, the Red Sox ended their 86-year championship drought by winning the World Series that same year.
